Within the last year, the market has had more challenges than I have come across around my 3 decades experience. In the past I have seen sharp price increases, and I have seen several shortages, and delivery delays because of plastic resin allocations by resin manufacturers. This is definitely the very first occasion I have seen all these issues at the same time.
PTFE Rod (TFE) and Kynar - PVDF are both on allocation.
These two resins are in short supply. The PTFE Sheeting product PTFE (TFE) as well as Kynar-PVDF manufacturing requires a mineral called Fluorspar which is mined in Mongolia and China. The world need for this mineral has grown significantly, as well as supply has tightened. PTFE materials have high heat resistance, excellent chemical resistance and incredibly low co-efficient of friction (slick) and is used within a good deal of purposes from non-stick fry pans to ptfe tape for home use. This mineral is a key raw materials inside the production of fluoropolymers, fluorolubricants and lots of refrigerants. This increase in demand bundled with shortage of raw materials is responsible for a dramatic price increase (almost double over the past year), shortages, and we expect these two factors to stay in affect in the near future.
